What swing plane is — and how to measure yours

Steep, flat, over the top, stuck behind you. Four labels golfers hear constantly and almost never see a number for. Here is what the plane is, what the numbers say, and how to read yours.

Short answer

Your swing plane is the angle the clubhead travels on as it comes down to the ball. It is measured against the line your shaft makes at address — extend that line and you have your reference plane. What matters is not whether you are above it or below it, but how much of the downswing you spend close to it, and whether it crosses above your elbow plane on the way down.

Why swing plane matters

The plane is the angle the club comes down on. Coming over the top cuts across the ball from the outside, and out comes a slice, or a pull to the left. Getting stuck too far inside does the opposite: the ball starts right, or turns over into a hook. What you want is the club falling towards the target line rather than cutting across it. (Directions are for a right-handed player.)

That is why the plane sits behind so many ball-flight problems. A slice is rarely a grip problem, and it is almost never a "keep your head down" problem. It is usually a path problem — and path is what the plane measures. When it goes wrong, it nearly always goes wrong before the downswing, in the start of the backswing.

  • The white dashed line — your shaft line at address, extended. It is the floor of the channel.
  • The green dashed line — from the clubhead to your trail elbow. It is the ceiling of the channel — the swing should live between the two.
  • The path — where the clubhead actually went, coloured by how far it strayed from the channel: green inside it, amber leaving it, red well outside.

The swing plane numbers

The plane is not one number, and treating it as one is where most advice goes wrong. These are the four Golfective reports, with the reference it uses for each.

Time on plane
The fraction of the downswing spent within 5° of your reference plane. This is the consistency number — the one that separates good ball strikers from the rest.

Which side of your own backswing the club came down on. Positive is over the top, negative is under it. The app tells you plainly that both are signatures, not faults.

How far the clubhead crosses above your elbow plane in transition. It is only measured once you set the second line — being under it is never a problem.

Plane angle
How steeply the clubhead path came down, measured against the ground. A lower number is a flatter swing. On its own the angle says little, so it is always reported as a difference — against your shaft angle at address, or against your own backswing.

What the research actually says

The only published study to look at loop direction found it has no correlation with playing level. Good players loop both ways. So Golfective reports your loop as a signature — a description of how you swing — and never as a red card. Steep is not worse than flat. It is just yours.

Why two lines and not one

One line on its own measures deviation, not direction. Peak deviation is dominated by the transition, and a swing can read "steep" while it brings the club under the path it took going back.

Hence the second line, from the clubhead to your trail elbow at address. The two form a channel, and the question stops being angular and becomes geometric: did the clubhead stay inside it, or did it cross the upper line coming down? That is what over the top really is — and why the number only appears once you place the elbow point.

How to measure your swing plane with a phone

Swing plane needs a down-the-line view: camera behind you, lined up with the target line. It is the one angle that looks along the plane, so the plane reads as a line you can put a number on. Face-on you look across it instead — you see the whole arc, but not its tilt.

You put the phone down, step up to the ball and set the club behind it. Club detection recognises the clubhead at address and starts recording on its own; when the swing is over, it stops and analyses. Nobody has to stand behind the camera.

The drill

The report does not stop at the number: depending on what your data shows, the app hands you the drill that fits your case. The swing in the video above, dropping under the channel, would get a different one. This is the one for coming over the top — with the mistake almost everybody makes doing it.

Frequently asked questions about swing plane

What is a good swing plane number?

There is no single value. The number to follow is time on plane: staying within 5° of your reference plane for 80% or more of the downswing. On loop, anything within ±5° means the club is essentially retracing its own path, and the over-the-top crossing should stay below 2°.

Is coming over the top always bad?

Crossing above the elbow plane in transition produces the out-to-in path behind the slice and the pull — that one is worth fixing. A steep loop on its own is not a fault: loop direction has never been linked to playing level in any published study, and there are plenty of good steep players.

What is the difference between steep and flat?

In Golfective they are your loop direction: steep means the club came down above the path it took going back, flat means below it, and both come as a single signed number. Coaches also use the words for the plane angle itself — a flat swing being one that sits low around the body — and that is the separate plane angle row further up. Neither reading is a fault on its own.

Are flat and stuck the same thing?

No. Flat is your loop direction — the club came down under the path it went back on — and on its own it is not a fault. Stuck is what happens when that goes too far: the club ends up behind your body coming down, your arms have no room to catch up, and the ball leaves on a push to the right or turns over into a hook. One is a signature; the other is a trap.

Can you measure swing plane with just a phone?

You can, from a down-the-line video. The reference plane comes from your shaft angle at address and the clubhead is tracked through the swing — no sensors, no markers, no launch monitor.

Why does my swing plane change between clubs?

It should. A driver sits at a much flatter shaft angle than a wedge, so the reference plane itself is different. That is why address lean is reported separately, and why history is kept per club instead of mixing them all together.
